Roger Federer suffered a shock loss to Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev within the third spherical of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Rublev, the world No 70, broke Federer thrice as he powered to a surprising 6-Three 6-Four win in 62 minutes.
The defeat was a blow to 20-time main champion Federer’s US Open preparations.
Rublev will now play compatriot Daniil Medvedev within the quarter-finals after the most important win of his profession.
World No Three Federer stated on www.atp.com: “He was tremendous clear – defence, offence, serving effectively. Did not give me something. He was in every single place.
“So it was powerful for me, however a wonderful match by him. I was impressed.”
After his victory, Rublev stated: “It’s such an incredible feeling if you’re enjoying a legend like Roger and all these individuals supporting him till the tip. At some point I hope I’m going to really feel the identical.
“Today I was just trying to do my best and was thinking in my head that I need to play every point until the end no matter what.”
In the meantime, Novak Djokovic beat Pablo Carreno Busta in straight units, 6-Three 6-4.
Djokovic will subsequent play Lucas Pouille within the quarter-final.
